The following is based on the different expressions used in the commentary of a televised game over Christmas 2001; two descriptions of the same (fictitious) movement, consisting of a long cross-field ball, a centre and a headed goal. The goalkeeper is blocked by his own defender! In this case, the difference in the language was somewhat extreme.
A typical route one goal. A hopeful punt upfield by Weir is collected by Moore, who's mis-hit shot reaches Ferguson and is nodded into the net past Barthez, who seemed to be impeded.
A magnificent goal. A glorious 50 yard pass by Beckham to Giggs, who whips in a pinpoint cross for Van Nistelrooy to power a header past Simonsen.
