Three Points for a Win?

What is the purpose of three points for a win?

I have never understood the reasons given:
Encourage attacking football - how? teams have even more incentive to "shut up shop" than with two points,
Encourage exciting football - not really; I have seen exciting, passionate and quality football in a 0-0 Merseyside derby
and, conversely, a really boring, one-sided game end 6-0.

What is wrong with three point wins?
Just look at the left hand table and justify relegating Team 8 - they have not lost a game and they average 3 goals per game
(of exciting, attacking, open football), while teams 6 and 7 have lost 8 of their 14 games and average only 1 goal per game
(of mainly boring defensive football).
Under a two point win, Team 8 finish third in the table - above the teams that have lost six or eight games more.

                   3 points 2 points
